Over the past decade, my journey as a management consultant working with corporations and governments has unveiled a fundamental truth – the essence of a great organization lies in its values. When I meet a new client, the first question that naturally arises is, “What are your company’s values?” This isn’t just a casual inquiry; it’s a dive into the heart of the organization, exploring how these values manifest in every aspect of their business. Do these values permeate the daily actions of the team, or do they get filed away until the next annual review?
While many of us grasp the broad societal values – such as not causing harm and treating others with respect – how well do we understand our personal values? Could you readily list your core values? Does your family collectively embrace a set of values that guide your decisions and actions? Crafting a shared set of values, whether on an individual level or with your loved ones, has the potential to be a transformative force in your life.
Now, that might sound like an exaggeration, but consider this: when you live authentically according to your values, they become the compass guiding your decisions. In moments of pressure or uncertainty, asking yourself, ‘Does this align with my values?’ can be a powerful guiding light.
Interestingly, the individuals I’ve encountered with Autism and ADHD often possess the clearest and most steadfast values. Their commitment to living authentically might be misconstrued as inflexibility, but it’s, in fact, an unwavering commitment to thriving in their truth.
Sharing your values with those around you – whether family, colleagues, or potential connections – can be a transformative way to deepen understanding. Take a moment to sit with yourself, reflect on the values that hold significance for you, and consider how they shape your ideal life. What values anchor your dreams, and which ones influence your day-to-day decisions? Once you’ve identified these values, make them a visual presence in your daily life. Place them somewhere in your home where you’ll encounter them regularly.
I’m genuinely interested in hearing about your values. Please share them in the comments below.
